Interest/Activities:
I am a current member/captain of the softball team at my school, I take it very seriously and I enjoy being on field doing what I do, just being being part of a team. I love anatomy and biology because I am very curious as to how the human body functions, specially the thoracic region and the cardiovascular system. I watch anime, listen to K-Pop and watch Korean Dramas, because I enjoy how creative most of the melodrama scenarios are. I am also fascinated and enjoy comparing Asian culture with mine, for example, in Spanish when we refer to adults or people of a respectable status, we use a formal term and like students in Japan, I used to clean my school back in El Salvador because it was part of the school’s educational purpose. I also enjoy going out with my friend and shopping. I love food and most of the time when I go out to eat, I avoid going to the same place because I want to try or simply just enjoy and appreciate something different.
Academic/Career interest:
I know I enjoy science and that my career will be something that is part of that, but I’m not sure about what I want to be or how to get there. I take my science classes with extra passion and determination, and I enjoy being outdoors so anything from environmental science or simple Biology satisfies me. I also know that whatever I choose, I want it to still be related to Asian culture, especially Japanese culture ,because I hope one day I’ll be able to live there. When I think about what I should do, I sometimes wonder if nursing is really my call because I like to help others and assist with health care.
Personal Statement:
I grew up in a different country and moved to the U.S when I was 12, but Japanese culture has always been around me. Even though I was in a completely different country and the smallest one in Central America, we would watch anime and cartoons but I didn’t know the difference at the time. So, I basically grew up watching old school cartoons. I remember I used to watch “Yu Yu Hakusho” and “Fruits Basket” on TV . As I became older, I began to get distracted by other things. Later in my last year of middle school, I started watching anime again and remember just how much I really enjoyed it. Then, in 10 grade, I started thinking about one day moving to Japan. One day my friend who was a junior at the time told me about the Japanese Plus program, so I started getting interested. I couldn’t join the program at the time, so I decided to do a different one which was the “Japan in DC” program. I got to learn and lot, but above all I enjoyed everything we did because everyday was exciting and we visited a lot of place I didn’t know existed in D.C. After then, I was able to join a year after and now I’m in Japanese Plus because I believe it will benefit me when I achieve my goal to go to Japan one day. I also think that even if I don’t go to Japan, it will help me a lot because I watch anime and it will save me time if I don’t use subtitles anymore. Even though I want to visit Japan, it is not what I am focused on. I just want to be able to speak a foreign language that will allow me to meet new people and gain more knowledge.
