Malia Butler

School: DC International School

Grade: Rising 11th Grader

Fun Fact: I have a baking business.

Interests/Activities:

Some of the things I like to do in my free time is listen to music. A couple of my favorite artists are Daniel Caesar, Malcolm Todd and Frank Ocean. I also love watching Korean dramas and thriller/murder mystery shows. Another thing that I’m interested in is baking. I recently started a cookie business where I sell cookies around my neighborhood and at school.

Academic/Career Interests:

In the future I would like to become an interior designer or be in architecture. Since I was 10 I’ve always enjoyed creating different styles of homes. Being able to mix different styles to create new ones has always been something I’ve enjoyed.

Why I joined the program:

The reason I applied to the Japan in DC program is because I’ve always had an interest in the culture. My favorite things about Japan is first the food. I love the different techniques they use to make their different meals. Another thing I love about Japan is the architecture. Since I’m interested in interior design and architecture, I find it interesting on the different styles of homes or temples. Just like how Japan is known for its tens of thousands of Buddhist temples. It has its own style that can be different from other countries. Lastly, I want to learn how the place I grew up in is connected to one of the most famous places ever.
