Apply for Japanese Plus

Globalize DC is now recruiting new students for our SY2022-23 school year program.

APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED: Wednesday, October 5, 2022

JAPANESE PLUS is a free afterschool Japanese language, culture, and career exposure program open to DCPS and DC charter high school students. Globalize DC will select up to 23 DC students for our SY2022-23 Japanese Plus program.

The program will meet from September 2022 through May 2023, twice a week – Wednesdays online after school (4:30-6:30 pm) and Saturday mornings in person (10 am-1 pm), plus additional meetings. The meeting site has not yet been finalized, but will be metro-accessible. Students who successfully complete the program will be eligible to earn high school credit towards graduation.

This year we are thrilled to be joined by two wonderful new Japanese language co-teachers, Takae Tsujioka and Shoko Hamano, both professors of Japanese at George Washington University.

Interested in applying?

To be eligible for this year’s Japanese Plus programs, students must be DC residents attending either a DCPS or DC charter school. Students must be 9th, 10th, or 11th graders, so that they will be able to continue with Level 2 Japanese Plus in SY2023-24. Only 12th graders who have already participated in Globalize DC’s Japanese Tamago program will be considered for acceptance. We are seeking students who:

  • Have a serious interest in studying Japanese language and culture.
  • Have time in their schedules to fulfill the requirements of the program.
  • Have a strong enough academic record to handle an extra class/program.
  • Demonstrate a high level of commitment to stick with the program from beginning to end.
